Martin Brodeur was honored by the NHL and the Devils before Friday night's game against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
In a ceremony prior to Friday night's game against the Tampa Bay
Lightning at the Prudential Center, the NHL and Devils honored goalie
Martin Brodeur for his 552 career wins.
It started with a video recapping his 552nd win on March 17. Mike
Emrick spoke of Brodeur and some of his biggest moments and introduced
a video of the game's greatest goalies.
Brodeur stood up on the Devils' bench when the video ended with his milestone.
Emrick: "Many times you have chanted, 'Marty's better.' Tonight we salute the man. Marty's the best."
Commissioner Gary Bettman, Devils owners Jeff Vanderbeek and Mike Gilfillan were introduced.
The NHL presented Brodeur with framed game summaries from his NHL
debut (March 26, 1992) and his 552nd win (March 27, 2009), as well as
game pucks from those two matches. He also got a Tiffany crystal with
Brodeur making a save etched into the glass.
At some point after the season, the NHL will dedicate a plaque in
the arena bearing his name in St. Leonard, Montreal, commemorating his
552nd career win.
The Devils gave him a framed painting of Brodeur in his first game,
a large painting of the goalie and a sterling silver goalie stick from
Tiffany engraved with 552.
His teammates gave him a basket of golf balls, wine and tickets for a four-night stay and golf at Pebble Beach in California.
Brodeur spoke briefly, thanking all of his head coaches, goalie
coach Jacques Caron and his 166 Devils teammates over the years.
